Abstract

Keywords: Self-Efficacy and Pre-Service Teacher. Having strong belief is the most essential modal as the first step in doing everything. Related with students university who prepare their career after finishing their study for undergraduate program, they should have belief that they are ready and capable for achieving their goals. The interesting case that I ever found with students who graduated from English Department students at IAIN Tulungagung are not always be an English teacher. In fact, I found some of them just stay at home without doing anything, spending their time by having English courses with young learners, be an entrepreneur, and continues her study for graduate program but with different study from undergraduate program, such us from English Departmen to Islamic Education Department (PAI). The objectives of this research are: 1) To know the level of self-efficacy of pre-service teachers for the eighth semester of English Department students at IAIN Tulungagung in academic year 2016/2017. 2) To know how do the eighth semester of English Department students at IAIN Tulungagung in academic year 2016/2017 develop their self-efficacy. In conducting this research, I used mix method. It is the combination of Quantitative and Qualitative approach to collect and analyze data. The population are the Eighth semester of English Department students at IAIN Tulungagung. The number of the population was 106 students. A number of sample was 53 and taken randomly . The subject of this research in qualitative phase which was taken by purposive sampling with some subject criteria included the students who have high level of self-efficacy, and those who have taught English in a certain school In Quantitative phase, The data were collected through survey by distributing questionnaires and analyze them using descriptive statistic to find mean scale of self-efficacy level, then calculating the precentage. In the qualitative phase, data were gathered through subject selection involved interview and documents review. The result of the research through survey showed the precentage of students’level of self-efficacy that most of English Department students have high level of self-efficacy. 9,4% students whose self-efficacy level are low and 90,5% students whose self-efficacy level are high. Then, from interview and documents review showed that the subjects develop their self-efficacy by having some experiences in teaching practices and seminars, learning and imitating idol’s performance in teaching, getting extrinsic motivation, also controlling psychological states such as anxiety, moods, doubt, and emotion. Finally, it can be concluded that the most of students have high self-efficacy. It can be assumed that they are ready to be an English teacher. For having high self-efficacy, it is needed some strategies that should be developed. Such as by having some experiences in teaching practices and seminars, learning and imitating idol’s performance in teaching, getting extrinsic motivation, also controlling psychological states such as anxiety, moods, doubt, and emotion. This research contributes some suggestions such for further researcher which can complete the research instrument so the information got will be rich more, and the subjects who were interviewed not only students who are teach in a certain shool, but also students whose level of self-efficacy were high but they are not teach in school yet. So, we can see the variety of strategies they done between students who taugh in a certain school, and those who are not yet.
