Language is a system of communication and it is very useful to compare it with other system of communication. In using language, people talk differently in different utterances and different listener. Communication between speaker and listener depends not only on the meaning of words in every utterance but also on how the utterances can be interpreted by the speaker to listener. Understanding the connection between the form and the function of language is very important because it will help us to explain the interpretation of language. The discipline devotes to investigation of the relationship between forms and function verbal communication is called discourse studies. This study attempts to analyze language function, it is interpreting other people’s language and expecting other people to interpret their own. The main objective of this study is to discover types of language functions used by the students in presentation are study. It explored the kinds of language function used by students English Department to improve their presentation. The research problems of this study were: 1) what are language functions found in presentation of sixth semester English Department Students at IAIN Tulungagung? 2) how are the language functions formally realized? 3) what type of language function is dominantly used in students’ presentation? The purposes of this study were: 1) to find out language functions in presentation of sixth semester English Department Students at IAIN Tulungagung 2) to know the formally realization of language functions and 3) to investigate the most language function used in students’ presentation. The research design of this study is descriptive quantitative survey. It is intended to investigate those three research problems in relation to language function. The data are the utterances in conversation of students’ presentation that containing types of language functions. The data are taken from the script of students’ presentation along with the context. This study found 1) language functions used by the speakers are 116 utterances contain referential function, 24 utterances contain phatic function, 21 utterances contain metalinguistic function, 20 utterances contain directive function, 4 utterances contain emotive function and 3 utterances contain contextual function. Yet, in this study the researcher did not find any utterances contain poetic function. 2) the formal realization of utterances containing emotive function consists of 3 declarative sentences and 1 interrogative sentence, directive function consists of 7 declarative sentences 1 interrogative sentences and 12 imperative sentences. Then, utterances containing phatic function consists of 12 declarative sentences and 12 interrogative sentences, poetic functions is 0 language functions found, referential function consists of 116 declarative sentences, metalinguistic function consists of 10 declarative sentences and 11 interrogative sentences, the last is contextual function consists of 3 imperative sentences. 3) the percentages of each type of language functions are; 2% used emotive function, 11% used directive function, 13% used phatic function, 0% used poetic function, 62% used referential function, 11% used metalinguistic function and 15 used contextual function. Based on the percentage, the researcher know that the language function which dominantly used by English Department students in doing presentation is referential function in 62% percentage. Based on the result of this study, the researcher wants to give suggestion for the future researchers. The next researchers can conduct the research with the same topic in different subject of the study. The next researchers are suggested to improve their research study in language which is still being rarely to be analyzed like poetic function.
