Abstract

ABSTRACT Safitri, Lia. Registered Number Student 12510184013. 2020. Developing English Tourism Material for College Students Based on the Local Wisdom. Thesis. English Education Department. Magister Program. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisors: Dr. Susanto, S.S., M.Pd. and Dr. Zulfatun Ni’mah, SHI, M.Hum. Keywords: English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English for Tourism, Local Wisdom, Need Analysis (NA), Material for English Tourism based on the Local Wisdom, Process of Developing Material. Tourism industry is a sector that needs qualified employees, especially in English language, to warrant the quality of the services. Yet, the fact shows that the person who works in a tourism sector is not always has tourism academy background. They might come from different academy such as English education program that provided tourism as elective subject. Regarding to this fact, the English for Tourism has an obligation to provide a material which reflects the real workplace situation since in some cases where English becomes foreign language, the ESP subject may be almost the only source of English. Unfortunately, some items in developing English Tourism material i.e. the relevancy between the materials with the real condition and the use of local content are missed. To response that condition, this research purposes two objectives. The first is analyzing the kinds of tourism material needed by the students and the second is describing the process of developing material for English tourism based on the local wisdom. To reach the objectives, the research and development design by Borg and Gall (2003) is chosen. The research is done through conducting need assessment; identifying specific skills, procedures, and learning tasks; identifying the characters of the setting; planning the material; developing the material; expert validation; user validation; revising the product; and final product. The students expected a book that has same goals with the subject aims; corresponds to the program and their needs; appropriate with the class situation; comprehensive, flexible and complete; has appropriate grading and progression; has good organization; provides reference section; has attractive lay out and various topics; and also involves local wisdom. The planning step was done through comparing NA result and the syllabus, analyzing; and collecting sources, while the prototype step was done through plotting the material then developing it into a book. The average score of expert validation were 3,79 and from the users were 3,23. Both of the result labelled book in very good and good category, so the book can be implemented in tourism class. The product of English Tourism material had been developed based on the students’ need and local wisdom. Yet, some parts of the book could be explored more to support the other parts in the book. The involvement of larger samples, the use of technology, and the book effectiveness might not be adequately captured. An experimental research could be conducted to test the effectiveness of the book.
