Abstract

ABSTRACT Thesis entitled “Connotative of Linguistics Units Containing Miserable Content in Selected English Songs Lyrics Popularized by Shawn Mendes” written by Kamila Fatimatuzzahro, NIM. 17203163165. Advisor: Dr. Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, S.S, M.Pd. Key words: denotative, connotative, lyrics, words, phrases. This research is motivated by the translation towards song lyrics that are often difficult to the song listener to catch another meaning of the content on the songs they are listening to. The researcher chose three selected Shawn Mendes’ song to be connotatively analyzed, because there are some words and phrases that lead to miserable content and quite difficult to be understood only with its literal meaning (denotation). So that the researcher wanted to analyze what are actually meant by the selected word and phrases of miserable content on those songs using Barthes’ theory that is the terms order of signification. The research problems of this research are; (1) what are the connotative of linguistics units found in words, phrases, containing miserable content that are found in the selected lyrics of Shawn Mendes’ songs? (2) Why connotative of linguistics units found in words, phrases containing miserable content of selected lyrics of Shawn Mendes’ songs? And this research is aimed to know another meaning (connotation) of selected song lyrics, therefore the researcher tried to analyze what are they and why connotative of linguistics units containing miserable content are used or found on those selected songs. This thesis is expected to increase the knowledge of linguistics field especially in semiotics that is denotative and connotative meaning. of the reader, especially for students and lecturer in teaching and learning English linguistics, specifically in teaching denotative and connotative meaning on semiotics study, and also for the reference for the next researcher in developing their thesis. This research used descriptive qualitative research with content analysis (document analysis). It was chosen because this research aimed at analyzing and describing denotative deeper into connotative meanings of the miserable content existed on the selected English song lyrics. Content analysis (documentation) method is used to conduct and collect the data for this qualitative research design, since this is a library research, the instrument of this research is basically the researcher themselves, because to collect the data, to get the sources, and to analyze the data depends on the researcher. In this case, the researcher obtained the data source from book, journal, internet, etc. And the researcher also used English dictionary and cultural context to analyze the denotative and connotative meanings. The result of this research showed all of the miserable contexts on those selected lyrics that are words and phrases led to “mentally distressed” meaning instead of their original meaning that is physical pain by showing its final signification that called myth using Barthes’ theory.
