Students must understand the content of the text by reading so that they get clear and detailed information and knowledge. There are several reasons that make many students feel lazy to read such as: the sentence is too much, students are less aware of vocabulary, and difficult to understand its content in the story because the sentence is too foreign to them. Some of these reasons make many students become bored and want to be alone in reading so that most students lack interest in reading. This research is attended to prove whether the Story Mapping Technique is effective to improve students' reading skill. Thus, the purpose of this study is to find out significant differences in students' reading skill before and after being taught by using the Story Mapping technique. The research design implemented in this study is pre-experimental through a quantitative approach. Meanwhile, the population is all 8thgrade of SMP 1 SUMBERGEMPOL; the sample is class VIII A which contains 20 students. From the result statistical analysis data using Paired Sample T-test using SPSS 16.0, it shows with t-count is 4.873. The researcher uses degree of significance of t-table is 0.05 in the table of significance. And the level of significance less than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05) means that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be seen from the degree of freedom is 19 and then the degree of significance is 0.000. The researcher found out that the students are more interested in learning narrative text by using story mapping technique. They could be easier to understand the contents of the story that is told.
