Abstract

The Effectiveness of Gallery Walk Technique on the Students’ Ability in Writing Narrative Text of the 10th Grade Students at MAN 3 Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd. Keywords: Teaching Writing, Writing Ability, Narrative Text, Gallery Walk. Writing is skill or ability from the authors to convey and organize their idea or knowledge into a readable text that has some meanings. Writing requires complex thinking to put ideas in their mind on a paper to transform them in words and become sentences by using structure and coherent organization The use of Gallery Walk is expected to have a positive effect in improving students' learning interest in following the lesson that influence to their learning outcomes especially in writing narrative text. In these techniques, the students are divided into some groups consisted of 5-6 students. Every student has his or her own responsibility in writing but he or she also works together in group. The formulations of the research problems were: 1) How is the students’ ability in writing narrative text taught by using Gallery Walk technique? 2) How is the students’ ability in writing narrative text without being taught by using Gallery Walk technique? 3) Is there any significant difference on the students’ ability in writing narrative text between taught by using and without using Gallery Walk technique? Research method: 1) The research design of this study was quasi experimental design with quantitative approach, 2) The population of this study was the tenth grade students of MAN 3 Tulungagung, 3) The samples were X MIA 1 class as control group consisted of 32 students and X MIA 3 class as experimental class consisted of 32 students, 4) The research instrument was in the form of writing test, 5) The data analysis was using Two Samples Independent T test. The result showed that the students’ mean value taught by using Gallery Walk technique was 74.63 while the students’ mean value taught without using Gallery Walk technique was 65.91. The students’ gained score who were taught by using Gallery Walk technique was 11.72 while the students’ gained score who were taught without using Gallery Walk technique was 5.16. T-count was 4.122 with standard error of difference 2.115, the critical value for 62 degree freedom (df) at significant value 5% was 0.000. It means that Ha which states that there is significant different score on the students’ writing ability in narrative text between taught by using and without using Gallery Walk technique is accepted. Whereas, Ho which states that there is no significant difference on the students’ ability in writing narrative text between taught by using and without using Gallery Walk technique is rejected. This means that there was significant effect of using Gallery Walk technique on the students’ ability in writing narrative text at MAN 3 Tulungagung in the Academic Year 2017/2018.
