Abstract

ABSTRACT Mahamdee Chetea, Student Registered Number 1723143105. The learning problem encountered by Thai student at English Education Department of IAIN Tulungagung in the second semester” Thesis. English Education Program Departement of Islamic Education State Islamic Colloge (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor : Nanik Sri Rahayu M,Pd. Keywords : Learning Problem, Strategy, Thai student Learning a second language is not always easy. Students have various difficulties and problems in learning English especially for Thai students who learn English in Indonesia. Most of Thai students at English Education Department of IAIN Tulungagung have problem in learning English. They encounter several problems in learning English. In this study seeks the information about the Thai students’ learning problems in speaking and writing English. The researchers focus on speaking and writing skills due to both skills are productive skill and they usually associated each other as well. The learner cannot write their words as they wish if their speaking skills are not fluent. In addition, productive skill is usually easily recognized to measure EFL proficiency. The formulation of research problems were: 1)What are the learning problems speaking and writing encountered by Thai international students at English Department of State Islam Institute of Tulungagung? 2) How do the students solve these problems? The purposes of this research were to: 1) To know what are the learning problems in speaking and writing encountered by Thai international students at English Department of State Islam Institute of Tulungagung 2) To know what how do the students solve these problems Research method: the research design in this study is narrative inquiry which is considered to be appropriate to explore the experiences of Thai students at English Education Department of IAIN Tulungagung. In selecting the participants, the researcher selected them by giving questionnaire and interview. In collecting data, the researcher collected them by narrative frame and in-depth interviewing. Thematic analysis was applied to their stories and positioning theory provided a theoretical lens to further analyze and interpret the participants stories. The results showed that English speaking problem encountered by the Thai students at English Education Department were linguistic problem including lack of listening skill, vocabulary grammatical knowledge, pronunciation. Non-linguistic problem include afraid to make mistakes, anxiety, nothing to say, lack of practice speaking, using more mother tongue. The ways that the students use to solve their problems are to practice to speak to English with other people, increase English vocabulary and phrases, watching English movie or video through Youtube playing game listen to songs, reading English books, consult with one who is master in English such as senior or teacher. Meanwhile, the results showed that English writing problem encountered by the Thai students at English Education Department were divided into firstly linguistic: firstly, linguistic problem: lack of grammatical knowledge, vocabular, difficulty in building sentences, difficulty to express idea into written text. Second, non-linguistic problem: lack of practice writing and low motivation. The ways that students use to solve their problems are: do many exercises, learn more about improving English skill, reading English books, increase new vocabularies, learn more about gramma through Youtube, practice writing in English such making sentences.
