Key words: Effectiveness, Writing Recount Text, Project Based Learning Writing recount text often becomes a problem for the students, especially in Senior High School. Mostly, the students face some problems in generating ideas to tell the events, organizing idea into paragraph of recount, less understanding about grammar, and some aspects of writing where students lack of vocabulary, spelling, and so on. To help the students solve the problems, the teacher should be able to find teaching method that makes the students interest and have enthusiasm in writing. Project based learning can be an alternative teaching method which attract students ‘willingness in writing especially writing recount text. Project based learning is related with Curriculum 13 that considered students’ centered which let students become more active. It allows students to learn based on their interest by giving students a project as the task. The project helps students to share their experiences in writing recount text because project based learning engages real world. The formulation of research problem in this study: “Is there any significant difference on the students writing recount text achievement before and after being taught by using project based learning at the tenth grade of MA Ma’arif Udanawu?” Based on the formulation of research problem, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of Project based learning on students’ writing recount text. The researcher used quantitative approach, exactly in pre-experimental design. The population of this study was all students at tenth grade of SMA Ma’arif Udanawu in the academic year 2017/2018. The sample of this study was 33 students of X IIS 4 that chosen by purposive sampling technique. The research instrument used was test. The researcher analyzed the data by using Paired Sample T-test with IBM SPSS Statistics 16.0. The finding showed that there is any significant difference between the results of pre-test and post-test. The mean of pre-test was 55.61, while the mean of post-test was 65.45. It means that there was increasing score on the students’ achievement. From statistical calculation of T-test showed that the significance value was 0.000. It was smaller than standard significance level (0.05). It can be drawn 0.000<0.05. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Therefore, Project based learning is effective to the students’ writing recount text achievement at the tenth grade of MA Ma’arif Udanawu. As a conclusion of the result above, project based learning can be used as an alternative method for English teacher in teaching and learning activity on writing recount text.
