Abstract

ABSTRACK Astutik, Arum Yuli. NIM. 1723143017. 2018. A study on the teaching English at Islamic Junior High School Al-Fattahiyyah Ngranti Boyolangu Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Departement. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, M.Pd. Keywords: Teaching English, learning motivation, learning method As a new Islamic school with thousand number of students, the English teaching at Islamic Junior High School Al-Fattahiyyah Ngranti Boyolangu Tulungagung is directed to achieve the school’s vision and mission. Islamic Junior High School Al-Fattahiyyah has a Vision “to produce a generation that is faithful, devoted, superior, skillful, have moral” Meanwhile its mission are “realizing all islamic activities and environments, implementing an effective and conducive teaching and learning process, providing students with English language skill”. So, at islamic Junior High School Al-Fattahiyyah the students not only learn theology and religion but also foreign language. In teaching learning process, the teacher should determine teaching method that is suitable with the material, design teaching learning activities, and motivate students to guarantee that the teaching learning process can run well. The statement of research problems 1) How does the teacher design English teaching and learning activities at Islamic Junior High School AlFattahiyyah Ngranti Boyolangu Tulungagung? 2) What method are used by the teacher English at Islamic Junior High School Al-Fattahiyyah Ngranti Boyolangu Tulungagung? 3) How does the teacher motivate the students to improve themselves in learning English?. The study belonged to descriptive qualitative design with qualitative approach. Data collection method were observation, interview, and documentation. 1) The subject was an English teacher and the students as the informant. 2) Data analysis covered data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. 3) Data trustworthiness checking of research and analysis by using triangulation data and presentation data. The findings showed that: 1) English subject was not designed integrated lee, but it was thought per skill covering listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Practically, speaking was given more portion to achieve the school’s vision. 2) Teacher used various methods relevant to the situations in the classroom, such as: lecturing method, inquiry method, GTM, communicative approach, and TPR. 3) Teacher conducted some ways in motivating students to learn English by (a) taking care of each of individual student (b) providing various teaching method.Practically, the provided teaching methods were important not only to help students understand the materials but to create inviting learning situation. Consequently, the students were motivated to learn English.
