Abstract

Keywords: Figurative Language, Surah Maryam 0f Holy Qur’an Language is the important means of communication, and almost everyday we use and find language with implicit meaning whether in the form of conversation or writing. One of them is in figurative form; it is the way of saying something other than the literal meaning of the word. It is also found in Qur’an, the main guidance book for the Moslem. It makes figurative language become very important to be studied to avoid misunderstanding especially in learning Qur’an itself especially in Surah Maryam. Statements of the problems are : (1) What are the kinds of figurative language used in English Translation text of Surah Maryam by Yusuf Ali? (2) What are the contextual meaning of figurative language used in English Translation text of Surah Maryam by Yusuf Ali?. The purposes of this study are : (1)To know the kinds of figurative language used in English Translation text of Surah Maryam by Yusuf Ali.(2) To identify the contextual meaning of figurative language used in English Translation text of Surah Maryam by Yusuf Ali. The researcher uses semantical content analysis with qualitative approach to identify the data. The data source of this study is English Translation text of Surah Maryam by Yusuf Ali. To complete the needed data the researcher collects some data from the library and the internet. The subject of the study is the English Translation text of Surah Maryam by Yusuf Ali from verse 1st – 98th. In this study the researcher is the primary instrument to gather data by reading data, choosing data, then, selecting data. After that, she identifies some figurative languages used in this data based on Robert Frost’s theory in figurative language, and then she describes the contextual meaning of those expressions use contextual theory and truth-conditioning theory. The researcher findings show that there are 18 kinds of figurative language found in English translation text of Surah Maryam by Yusuf Ali, they are : 1) Parable 2) Symbol 3) Euphemism 4) Exclamation 5) Oxymoron 6) Understatement(litotes) 7) Alliteration 8) Hysteron proteron 9) Onomatopoeia 10) Irony 11) Eponym/Allusion 12) Tautology 13) Personification 14) Rhetoric 15) Hyperbole 16) Simile 17) Paradox 18) Synecdoche The function of some figurative languages used here is to know and understand about the contextual meaning each verse that contained stories of Prophet, guidelines and philosophies of life from Allah. The writer realizes that this thesis has weaknesses and still far from being perfect. So, the writer invites constructive critics from the readers to make this thesis better. Last but not the least, the writer wants that the results of this study can give worthy contribution for the readers, for the next researchers the findings are expected can be used as references in conducting further studies about figurative language and to specify their analysis in one kinds of figurative language .
