Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, S.S., M.Pd. Key Words : speaking, learning strategy, good students Speaking is one of the important skills that must be mastered by all English students. Speaking is a source or tools used to deliverd information or the idea in order another people understand about what is talking about. It is widely known that speaking has many components such as : grammar, fluency, accuracy, and pronunciation. In other words speaking is a complicated skill. Although it is complicated, it was identified that some good students were successfull in mastering it. That is why, studying how good students were successfull in speaking was interesting. The formulations of the research problems were : 1) how are good students in speaking learn vocabulary and grammar to improve their speaking ? 2) how are good students in speaking learn pronunciation to improve their speaking ? 3) how are good students in speaking learn fluency and accuracy to improve their speaking ? 4) how are good students in speaking make preparation before performing speaking ? Research method : 1) the research design of this study was descriptive design with qualitative approach, 2) data sources of the research was teachers as the informant, good students as the subjects and related documentation, 3) the method of collecting data was observation and interview, 4) technique of verification was triangulation methodologically, 5) technique of data analysis was data reductions, data display and conclusion drawing. The results showed that (1) good students employed some strategies in mastering vocabulary and grammar through a) reading some books , b) finding the difficult words and checking or finding the meaning in the dictionary, c) writing down the difficult words and their meaning to be memorized, (2) good students employed some strategies in mastering pronunciation through a) sharing with the expert, b) making a conversation with the native speaker, expert, teachers and friends, c) watching the movie, (3) good students employed some strategies in mastering fluency and accuracy through a) watching the movie b) make a conversation with the expert (4) good students did some preparations before performing speaking through a) preparing the contents b) sharing with the teacher and friends c) training the speaking in front of the audiences c) doing a meditation.
