Abstract

ABSTRACT Rahmawati, Ria Putri: Student Registered Number: 1723143146, 2018. The Effectiveness of Tea Party Strategy toward Students’ Achievement in Reading Comprehension of Recount Text at MTs Sultan Agung Jabalsari in Academic Year 2017/2018. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Departement. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Emmi Naja, M. Pd. Keywords:, Reading Comprehension Achievement, Recount Text, Tea Party Reading is the most difficult skill for language learners to be mastered, because in the process of reading, the readers should comperhend the text or combine information from a text and their own background knowledge to build a meaning. Their failures in doing exercise, limited vocabulary and their low motivation influence in their reading achievement. It becomes a challenge for English teacher to increase students’ motivation in order to achive learning goals. So, it needs an interesting strategy. Tea Party is a pre reading strategy to activate the students’ background knowledge by making prediction. Prediction helps students to connect between ideas in the text and what they already know. This strategy allows the students asked to move around their chair to talk each other about the clue and make prediction about the text. So, it will make the students easier to comprehend the text. The problems of this research are: (1) How is the students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Tea Party strategy?, (2) How is the students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught without using Tea Party strategy?, (3) Is there any significant difference of the students’ achievement taught by using Tea Party strategy and without by using Tea Party strategy? This reserach is aimed to find out: (1) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Tea Party strategy. (2) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught without using Tea Party strategy. (3) The significant difference of the students’ achievement taught by using Tea Party strategy and without by using Tea Party strategy. In this present study, the researcher used quasi-experimental research design to achieve the research objective. The subjects of this research were the eight grade students of MTs Sultan Agung Jabalsari. There were two classes observed for this research, VIII A as an experimental group, and VIII B as a control group. The experimental group was taught by using tea party strategy while the control group was taught by lecturing strategy. There were four meetings for each group including the pre-test and the post-test. The method of collecting data that used is reading test. The analysis technique used is SPSS 16 especially Independent Sample T-test. Research findings: (1) The mean score of students who taught by using Tea Party strategy is 70,71. (2) The mean score of students who taught without using Tea Party strategy is 53,18. (3) The result of computation using T-test showed that significance 2-tailed is 0,001. The value of distribution with degree of freedom (N1 + N2 – 2) = (21+22 –2) = 41 and the level of significance is 0, 05(5%). The explanation from the result of significance 2 tailed and significance level said that sig 2-tailed < sig level (0,001<0,05). So, the Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It proved that Tea Party strategy is effective to improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehension in recount text.
