Abstract

ABSTRACT Nuraziza, Dewi. NIM. 1723143036. 2018. The Effectiveness of Using Information Gap toward Eight Grade Students’ Speaking Achievement at MTs Darussalam Kademangan Blitar. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: effectiveness, Information Gap, student’s speaking achievement Speaking is an activity of sharing information orally. It becomes one of the most difficult skills in English because it requires some aspects to be mastered such as grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The use of Information Gap could create a condition that helped the students speaking with high motivation. In Information Gap, the students are divided into some groups consisted of 2 students. Every pairs of students would ask about the information that not written on their task to create complete spoken monologue text. The formulations of the research problems were: 1) how is the students’ achievement in speaking taught by using Information Gap? 2) how is the students’ achievement in speaking taught without using Information Gap? 3) is there any significant difference on speaking achievement between the students taught by using Information Gap and those taught without using Information Gap? Research method: 1) the research design of this study was Quasi-experimental design with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this study was eight grade students of MTs Darussalam Kademangan Blitar, 3) the samples were VIII-C class consisted of 37 students and VIII-D class consisted of 35 students, 4) the research instrument was test, 5) the data analysis was using T-test. The result showed that 1) the mean score of students on pre-test taught by using Information Gap was 52.70 and the mean score of posttest was 61.86. The gain of the mean score was 9.16. 2) the mean score of students on pre-test taught without Information Gap was 51.51, and the mean score of posttest was 54.80. The gain of the mean score was 3.29. 3) the result of t-test at significance level of 0.05 showed that the significant values (sig-2 tailed) was 0.001 smaller than 0.05 (0.001 < 0.05). The result means that there is significant different on speaking achievement between the students taught by using Information Gap and those taught without using Information Gap. In conclusion, using Information Gap is effective and applicable for teaching speaking at eight grade students of MTs Darussalam kademangan Blitar.
