Key words: effective, reading comprehension, SQ4R For today’s people, making reading as a daily routine may not easy, particularly in Indonesia. According to the survey done by Central Connecticut State University in Britain, Indonesia gets rank 60th out of 61 countries in term of reading interest. It can happen because of the culture habit. Meanwhile, reading comprehension is in demand right now. Reading plays role of getting knowledge from which the people should infer their existing knowledge to understand the text book. To improve reading comprehension ability, a certain method is needed. The method should be taught while teaching and learning to improve students’ reading comprehension ability. The researcher offers one method which can be used as an alternative to improve reading comprehension ability. The method is combination of Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Reflect and Review (SQ4R) used to get information by understanding text deeply to improve reading skill. The objective of this study was to find out whether there was significant different score between the students taught by using SQ4R and those who were not taught by using SQ4R in tenth grades of Vocation School 1 Bandung or SMKN 1 Bandung. The research method of this study was quantitative, particularly experimental research with quasi-experimental design exactly in nonrandomized control group, pretest-posttest design. The population was tenth grades of SMKN 1 Bandung which consistedof 720 students. Meanwhile, the samples of this study was X TKRO 1 and X TKRO 3 which consisted of 69 students. The sampling technique was purposive sampling and the instrument was tests. In collecting data, the researcher used pre-test and post-test. The analyzing of data showed that the data was normal and homogeny. So, the researcher chose z-test to test the hypothesis. The result found that statistical value was bigger than critical value (3,4375> 1,96). In other words, H0 can be rejected. Therefore, it could be stated that there was significant different score from the students taught by using SQ4R and those who were not taught by using SQ4R. In addition, the gain mean of the experimental group was bigger than the gain mean of the control group (13,71> 7,79). It means that, there is an improvement on students’ reading comprehension ability in tenth grades of SMKN 1 Bandung. In other word, SQ4R can be used as an alternative method for reading comprehension.
