Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd Keywords: Effectiveness, Speaking ability, Socratic method Speaking skills is a very important ability because it is the main foundation in conducting daily life as a means to communicate in order to interact with social life. Besides, as social beings, humans also more use spoken language or to communicate with each other. Speaking for humans is used as a tool of communication to express opinions, convey intent, message, express feelings, and so on. At this time, English is one of the languages spoken as the language of the world. In the school, improving students’ speaking skill is very challenging for every teacher. There are many problems in the speaking class. The problem is the learner looked shy, passive in class activity also often worried to make mistakes when they spoke using English. The aim of this research is to solved the students problem in low participation which make them being passive in speaking class and make them better in speaking English. In this research, the researcher want to solve the problem by using Socratic method in teaching speaking at the tenth grade of SMK NU Tulungagung. Socratic method is a way of presenting material of learning in which students are faced with a row of question. Which a series of questions are expected to enable students to find the answers, on the basis of their own intelligence and ability. Through this method, the students also trained to be more active and confidence to speak in front of public speaking also to share their opinion about something. The formulation of research problem was: how is the effect of using Socratic method in students achievement at SMK NU Tulungagung? Whereas the purpose of this study was to know the significant difference on the students speaking achievement before and after being taught by using Socratic method at the tenth grade students of SMK NU Tulungagung. Research method: 1) the research study in this study was quantitative research through pre-experimental research one group pretest-postest design by using Socratic method in students speaking achievement. 2) the sample of this study was all of students at the tenth grade Farmasi in academic year 2017/2018 of SMK NU Tulungagung which consists of 31 students (28 females and 3 males). The researcher scored four components of speaking skills (Pronunciation, Vocabulary, Fluency and Grammar). The result showed that the average score in students speaking achievement before being taught by using Socratic method was 59,71. While the average of students in students speaking achievement by using Socratic method was 66,48. the tscore was 18,595, whereas ttable with significant level 0.05 was 2.042. So, tscore > ttable. (18.595> 2.042). Means that the alternative hyphothesis can be accepted because there is no error in teaching method, and it can be said that the teaching method effective in teaching and learning at the tenth grade of SMK NU Tulungagung is effective. In other words, Socratic method can be used as an alternative method to teach speaking at senior high school level.
