Abstract

ABSTRACT Dewi, Diah Ratna. Student Registered Number. 2813123050. 2017. The Effectiveness of Using Scanning Technique on Students’ Reading Comprehension of First Graders at SMPN 1 Besuki. Thesis. English Education Departmet. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd. Keywords: effectiveness, scanning technique, reading comprehension In the teaching reading, there are some techniques that are used. One of them is scanning technique. This technique can make the students to comprehend the text without read entire text. The students are looking only for information that is needed either in the form of words or phrases in the text. In this case, the researcher tries to implement scanning technique on teaching reading which intent to know the students’ ability in reading at SMPN 1 Besuki. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) How is the students’ achievement in reading comprehension before being taught using scanning technique? 2) How is the students’ achievement in reading comprehension after being taught using scanning technique? 3) Is there any significant effect of scanning technique toward reading comprehension? Based on the research problems, the objectives of this research were: 1) To know the students’ achievement in reading comprehension before being taught using scanning technique 2) To know the students’ achievement in reading comprehension after being taught using scanning technique 3) To know whether there is any significant effect of scanning technique toward reading comprehension. In this research, the researcher used quantitative approach with pre-experimental design (one group pre-test and post-test). The population of this research was the entire first grade students of SMPN 1 Besuki, while the sample was VII F class that occupied by 21 students. The researcher used purposive sampling for taking sampling. The instrument of this research was test. The data analyzed by using T-test formula at SPSS 16.0 for windows. The result showed that the students’ mean score in reading before they are taught using scanning technique was 64.00. While the students’ score after they are taught using scanning technique was 78.48. The data computation of t-test shows that P-value (Sig.) is 0.000, and it is smaller than 0.05 or 5% (0.000<0.05). In consequence, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected; it means that there is significant different achievement of students before and after being taught using scanning technique. Thus, it can be conclude that scanning technique is effective to teach reading for Junior High School.
