Speaking is a productive skill. All people in the world know how important speaking is. We speak to express inner thoughts and emotions, make sense of complex and abstract thought, to learn and to communicate with others, also to fulfill our wants and needs. This study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of group interaction on students speaking skill of eight graders students at MTs Al Ma’arif Tulungagung. The use of group can increase students’ motivation because the size of the group makes the English teacher easy to control the members of each group, small group also provides a social framework because the students can interact each other and share their experience to solve their problems. The formulation of research problem: Is there any significant difference between student’s speaking ability before they are taught by using group and after they are taught by using group? Based on the formulation of research problem, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of group interaction on students speaking skill. This study used quantitative approach with pre-experimental design. The population of the research is all the students of eight grade at MTs Al Ma’arif Tulungagung. The sample of this research is class VIII B consisting of 35 students. Meanwhile, the instrument is test which is used to conduct pre-test and post-test. The data collected through pre-test and post-test were analyzed by using Paired Samples T-test with SPSS Windows 16.0. This study reveals that there are two important points: 1) the students’ mean in speaking before using group interaction is 66.68 and after using group interaction is 72.77. 2) In addition with T test analysis used by researcher, with the significant level 0.05 and the result of tcount is 29.471 with ttable is 2.032. It presents that the difference value between tcount and ttable is 27.439. The above mentioned different mean and value indicated that group interaction is effective for the teaching speaking.
