Abstract

Registered Number Student. 2813133043. 2017. “The Effectiveness of Using Team Game Tournament (TGT) on Vocabulary Mastery of First Grade Students at SMAN Campurdaratin Academic Year 2016/2017”. Thesis. English Education Program. State Islamic College Institut (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr.ErnaIftanti, S.S.,M.Pd Keywords:Effectiveness, Team Game Tournament Technique, Vocabulary mastery. In teaching vocabulary mastery the students get difficulty to enrich vocabulary or to memorize new words, because they are taught only by remembering and memorizing the meaning of word as happened in among EFL students at SMAN 1 Campurdarat. Teaching vocabulary by using Team Game Tournament (TGT) technique is considered appropriate to improve the student’s vocabulary mastery. Therefore, the researcher is interested to finding out the effects of TGT to improve vocabulary mastery for the First Grade students of SMAN 1 Campurdaratin Academic Year 2016/2017. Thus, the research objective is intended to know whether TGT technique is effective to memorize the word and improve the vocabulary mastery. The research method used in this study is a pre-experimental design. With the population students of the First Grade at SMAN 1 Campurdarat which consists nine classes (270 students). The sampling of this research used non probability sampling and get the class of X-IPS 4 consist of 28 students as a sample. Meanwhile, the instrument is test which is to conduct pre-test and post-test. The data collected through pre-test and post-test were analysis by using paired sample T-test with SPSS windows 16.0. This study reveals that there are two important points: 1) The students’ mean of vocabulary mastery before being taught by using TGT is 80.35 and after being taught by using TGT is 90.17. So, that the difference score is 9.82. 2)Moreover, with T-test analysis that used by researcher, the result of significant value is 0.000 with the significant level 0.05 and the result of tcount = 13.962 with ttable= 1.70. It presents that the difference value between tcount and ttable is12.262. The above mentioned difference mean and value indicated that TGT is strongly effective to improve vocabulary mastery the First Grade at SMAN 1 Campurdarat. It is able to be pedagogically implemented in improve vocabulary instruction. The researcher only used one group pre-test and post-test it is suggested to conduct the same study by using true experimental or quasi experimental.
