Key Words: Writing, Recount Text, Self talk Strategy This research was conducted to implement the strategy of self talk strategy which was proved to solve the students’ writing skill in recount text problems. This research was purposed at improving students writing skill in recount text at second grade of MTsN Tunggangri Kalidawir in the academic year 2015/2016. Self talk strategy was chosen to solve the students problems in writing recount text because self talk strategy was a strategy that could help the students to improve their writing skill especially in recount text that before they still less in mastering how to write essay. In this research, the problem of study ws formulated as follows “ How can Self Talk strategy improve students’ writing in recount text at second grade of MTsN Tunggangri Tulungagung in the Academic year 2015/2016?” This research design used in this study was collaborative classroom action research. In this research, the researcher collaborated with the English Teacher. This research was conducted in two cycles. In the cycle there were three meetings. Each meeting consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of the the study was the second grade of MTsN Tunggangri Kalidawir in the Academic year 2015/2016. The result of this study that the use of self talk strategy could improve the students’ writing skill in recount text. The improvement was indicated by the achievement of the students’ writing scores. In the preliminary test, all the students in VIII D got scored < 75. So, it can be concluded that the test result could not get success. While in the cycle one, there were 30 students or 71.4% pass the test and the 12 students or 28,5 % could not success. It means that criteria of successwas not achieved yet, becuase the criteria of success that had been determined were 80%. In the second cycle improved to 35 students or 83,3 % pass the test. Based on the findings described above, it was concluded that the use of the self talk strategy was successful to improve the students writing skill in recount text and the implementation of self talk strategy got positive responses from the students. based on the result, the researcher suggests many things. Especially for the students, they can use this strategy in their writing skill of recound text. For the English teacher the use of this strategy as alternative way in teaching writing viii to help the students writing to improve their writing skill. Then, for the next researcher, he suggests that this strategy will be useful for the researcher as the reference to make a further research, especailly to improve the students’ writing skill.
