Abstract

Student Registered Number. 2813123103. 2016, The Effectiveness of Using Song Toward the Eighth Grade Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at MTsN Tunggangri in Academic Year 2015/2016. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Nany Soengkono Madayani. SS, M.Pd Keywords: effectiveness, song, vocabulary. Vocabulary is the most important one in teaching and learning English language. Vocabulary is the key to be successful in mastering English and it is also foundation to be able to master English very well. One of the media in mastering vocabulary is Song. The lyric of songs usually are easy to be understood. It gives motivation and makes the relation between the teacher and students closer. Song can be very useful to students’ vocabulary because it can be practiced inside and outside the classroom and can be enjoyed every time and everywhere. The formulation of the research problems were (1) How is student’s score in vocabulary before being taught by using Song? (2) How is student’s score in vocabulary after being taught by using Song ? (3) Is there any significant different score before and after being taught by using Song? The purposes of this research were to: (1) to know student’s score in vocabulary before being taught by using Song, (2) to know student’s score in vocabulary after being taught by using Song, (3) to know significant different scores of students in vocabulary before and after being taught by using Song. The research design was pre-experimental research design by using one group pre-test and post-test with quantitative approach. The population of this research is all of the class of eighth grade students in MTsN Tunggangri that is consist of ten classes. The sample of this research was the VIII E grade students at MTsN Tunggangri academic year 2015/2016 consists of 42 students. The research instrument were tests that were pre-test and post-test. The data analysis was using T-test. The result of this study showed that the mean of total scores of students’ vocabulary mastery before being taught by using Song was 65.42. The mean of total scores of students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught by using Song was 77.42. Statistical computation using T-test showed the result of t-count was (7.440) and the result of t-table for standard significant 0.050% was 2.019. It was known that t-count was higher than t-table (7.440 > 2.019). In other words, the alternative hypothesis stated that song is effective toward students’ vocabulary mastery. It means that the alternative hypothesis ( Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Based on the result of this study, there was significant different scores of students’ in vocabulary before and after being they taught by using Song. So, song was effective media towards students’ vocabulary mastery at MTsN Tunggangri. Finally, the writer suggests to the teachers that should song as one media in the teaching vocabulary.
