Abstract

ABSTRACT Hamida, Aniqul. Registered student 2813123038.2016 “The Effectiveness of Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) Technique in Improving Students Vocabulary Achievement in the First Grade Students at SMP Islam Al Azhaar Tulungagung”. Thesis English education program. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S.,M.Pd. Keyword: Technique, autonomous learners Vocabulary is one of difficult problems in learning English. Because of this reason, the researcher should find the appropriate technique of teaching to help students solving their problems in learning vocabulary. Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) technique is believed to be appropriate technique to help the students become autonomous learners (Kurzweil, 2002 & Antoniosyola, et. al., 2012), understand the vocabulary (Aprillianty, 2014), memorize the vocabulary they have learned and spirit in learn vocabulary (Mutholi’ah, 2012, Antoniosyola, et. al., 2012, Panjaitan & Gintings, 2012), to create the teaching learning process more effective and systematically (Mutholi’ah, 2012),to motivate students in learning vocabulary (Timotius. et. al., 2012). Another advantages is to help students be more joyful, interesting, and enthusiastic teaching learning atmosphere (Panjaitan & Gintings, 2012). To collect data, the researcher used Experimental research with pre-experimental design. The design of this researcher is one group pre-test and post-test. This pre-experimental design involves three steps; pre-test, treatment, and post-test. In this research, to collect the data on pre-test and post-test, the researcher used test as an instrument. Before using this test, the researcher conducted validity and reliability testing. The result of the test shows that the instrument is valid and reliable. The result of data analysis using statistical and calculating SPSS 16.0 windows reveals that tcount is bigger than ttable.. Researcher found that the statistical test by using t-test shows that the mean pre-test and post-test is -11.667, standard deviation is 8.731, and mean standard error is 1.905. The lower difference is -15.641, while upper different is -7.692. The result value of test t-test is -6.123 with df 20 and significance 0.000. According to the result of test score by comparing tcount with ttable where df = 20, the result of numeral ttableis 2.086 for standard significant 5%. It means that tcountis bigger than ttable (-6.123>2.086). It can be concluded that alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. So, Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) technique is effective to teach vocabulary. By applying this technique, the teacher can make students be more enthusiastic, joyful, understandable with the lesson, students are more independent and autonomous learners.
