Undergraduate Program in English Education Department Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung, Advisor: Dr. Nurul Choyimah, M.Pd. Keywords: Code Switching, Zumrotus Salamah Primary School English is one of international languages. It is used in international events across countries including in Indonesia. In Indonesia English is taught in all levels including in Primary School level. Zumrotus Salamah Primary school is one of the international standard of Primary Schools located in Tawangsari, Kedungwaru, Tulungagung where this school uses English as the daily language around this school. The Zumrotus Salamah Primary School uses full English in teaching Math, Science, and English. Here, the researcher was sure that code switching appears in teaching and learning process, for example, when the teacher wants to make sure whether the students have already understood or not about the explanation related to a certain material, because in Indonesia English is still as the foreign language. This research was designed to focus about code switching. Then, the researcher formulated the research questions as follows: (1) what code switching are generally performed by English teacher in teaching and learning process in Zumrotus Salamah Primary School? (2) what reasons influence English teacher to perform code switching in teaching and learning process in Zumrotus Salamah Primary School?. The purposes of this research were (1) investigate what kind of code switching are generally performed by English teacher in teaching and learning process in Zumrotus Salamah Primary School (2) to investigate what reasons influencing English teacher to perform code switching in teaching and learning process in Zumrotus Salamah Primary School. The subjects of this research were English teacher in sixth grade of Zumrotus Salamah Primary School. Namely Mr Budoejo, S.S. The instruments were used to collect the data were interview, observation in the class, and documentation. So, the researcher could see, record, and write down all the utterances produced in the classroom. Then, the researcher transcribed the utterances and classified them based on the type. In this research, the researcher used qualitative as the approach and descriptive as the design. The data was collected around January until February 2015 at Zumrotus Salamah Primary School. In observing, the researcher found more than 50 data about code switching, but here the researcher only chose 24 data because most of them had the similarities in their each type. Based on the researcher’s analysis, the researcher found that there were three kinds of code switching generally performed by English teacher in this school, they are (1) extra sentential code switching, (2) intra sentential code switching, and (3) inter sentential code switching. It is exactly same type which is recognized on Poplack's theory. So, this finding can answer the first research question and strengthen the existed theory. The researcher also found that code switching was used by English teacher in teaching and learning process depend on the need. The teacher could speak English around 85% in his explanation but in other condition he could speak English until 95%. In Zumrotus Salamah Primary School, the students do not only learn but also use English as the language instructions and language communication. Then, the researcher found that there were three reasons why the English teacher performed code switching in teaching and learning process, they were (1) switching was used as a rule or procedure in Cambridge primary school, (2) code switching was used to make English as the habit for the students in English environment, and (3) code switching was used to confirm to the students whether the students have already understood or not in teaching and learning process. So, the results of this research can confirm the theories from experts. Based on that conclusion, the researcher suggests to (1) the English teachers to try starting the applying of code switching when conducting teaching and learning process in the classroom or outside of classroom especially in Primary School level and (2) the next researchers to conduct the other research to know how the existence of code switching in Primary School level for another schools. The researcher also expects that the result of this research can be used as reference to conduct a further research that is related to the using of code switching in teaching and learning process for different subjects, or different phenomenon in another environment or for other aspects like curriculum, method, or strategy use in a certain school.
