One of technique in teaching vocabulary is inquiry technique. In this technique, the students learn to observe, find, and work by themselves. It is one of contextual teaching learning method where in this technique the students might learn independently through they can improve their critical thinking that happen on their environment. The research problems of the research were: (1) How is the students’ achievement in vocabulary before they are taught using inquiry as the technique? (2) How is the students’ achievement in vocabulary after they are taught using inquiry as the technique? (3) Is or are there any significant different scores before and after being taught using inquiry technique? The objectives of the research is intended to reach the following purposes: (1) To know the students’ achievement in vocabulary before they are taught using inquiry as the technique, (2) To know the students’ achievement in vocabulary after they are taught using inquiry as the technique, (3) To find out significant different scores before and after being taught using inquiry technique. Research design used in this study is pre-experimental research with one group pre test and post test with quantitative approach. The population of this research is all of the class of second grade students in MTsN Tunggangri that consists of ten classes in academic year 2014-2015 with total of students 386 students, 183 boys and 203 girls. The sample of population in this research is D class of second grade students at MTsN Tunggangri consisting 40 students, 20 boys and 20 girls. The instrument is used by the researcher is test. The analysing of the data used t-test. The result showed that there was difference between the averages of students’ vocabulary score before and after they are taught using inquiry technique. The averages score of students pre test is 25, while the average score in post test is 35.6. Tcount was 5.965, where as Ttable with significant level 5% was 2.023. So, the Tcount was higher than Ttable (5.965>2.023). It can be concluded that alternative hypothesis (Ha) which states that there is significant different on the students vocabulary mastery who were taught before using inquiry technique and after using inquiry technique is accepted. Whereas, null hypothesis (Ho) which is states that there is no significant different on the students vocabulary mastery who were taught before using inquiry technique and after using inquiry technique is rejected. In other words, inquiry technique can be used as an alternative technique to teach vocabulary to the students at Junior High School level.
