Language is the medium of literature, and cohesive devices that cover grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion occurrence in the short stories are occured. The function of cohesive devices are as the way of getting text hang together as the whole as indicators of text unity. Thereby, it proved that the connectedness and unity among the short story are created through the principle of cohesion through both grammatical and vocabulary. The organizations of those devices are categorized as cohesion which is also considered as one of the elements that helps the readers to be able to perceive and interpret language well, especially in written form. For that reason, the formulation of the research problems were: what types of cohesive devices used in selected short stories retold by Slamet Riyanto and what is the dominant type of cohesive devices used in selected short stories retold by Slamet Riyanto. Hence, the main objective of this study were: to find out the types of cohesive devices used in selected short stories retold by Slamet Riyanto and to find out the dominant type of cohesive devices used in selected short stories retold by Slamet Riyanto. Research method of this study: the research design on this study was descriptive method with qualitative approach. The data source of this study is selected short stories retold by Slamet Riyanto such as the Legend of Baru Klinting, the legend of Ki Ageng Mangir Wonoboyo, the legend of Nyai Brintik, the legend of DanauTondanu, The legend of Nyai Dasima, and the legend of Kalimas and they become data of analysis. To analyze data the writer did some steps. They are: (i) reading and understanding the stories, (ii) Interpreting them to find cohesive devices are used in the short stories, (iii) analyzing the types of cohesive devices, (iv) describing and finding the most dominant type of cohesive devices. This study has obtained the following results. The data are analyzed by exploring Halliday and Hasan theory, George Yule, and also Guy Cook theories since they have proposed the more vivid and more complete in analyzing cohesion rather than other theories. There are two types covered by cohesive devices; grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. Based on Halliday and Hasan theory, grammatical cohesion comprises reference, ellipsis, conjunction, and substitution. This study finds that the most dominant occurrence is conjunction found 37 data, followed by reference found 31 data, ellipsis found 7 data, and substitution found 2 data. Meanwhile, based on George Yule and Guy cook theories, lexical cohesion covers repetition, synonymy, hyponymy, metonymy, and antonymy. Hence, it can be found that the dominant occurrence from lexical cohesion in the short stories is repetition found 12 data, followed by hyponymy found 5 data, metonymy found 3 data, antonymy found 2 data, and synonymy found 1 data. From the data that have shown, it can be assume that grammatical cohesion is more dominant occurrence than lexical cohesion in the selected short stories retold by Slamet Riyanto. Based on the research question and discussion of the data presentation and analysis, the results of this study are expected to be able to be useful for the readers especially for English Department students, teachers, writers, and any other professions who have intention produce more qualified and reasoning utterances, writing, literary works or any other production especially to write form of language to achieve their purposes.
