English Education Program. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd Keywords: effectiveness, hangman game, vocabulary mastery Learning vocabulary is essential. It is the mastery of vocabulary that can assist students to improve their language skills. Without having enough vocabulary, learners cannot comprehend the meaning of the text or even in conversation to get the intention from the speakers. Due to the importance of vocabulary for four skills in English, vocabulary allows the learners to receive and transfer the information they have gotten. Learning vocabulary is not only happened in a formal institution, but also occurred in English courses such as ATI English course. Moreover, English teachers in the courses must be innovative to help students’ mastery of vocabulary. One of the ways is done by involving a fun game that is relevant to learning vocabulary like “Hangman Game”. However, it had not been proved yet whether Hangman game is effective to teach vocabulary or not. Therefore, researcher prepared two classes where was taught by Hangman game and without Hangman games. The aim is to know the effectiveness of using Hangman Game on students’ vocabulary mastery at ATI English Course Tulungagung. The formulation of the research problem is: “Is there any significant difference score on students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught by Hangman Game and those by using a conventional teaching method in ATI English Course Tulungagung?”. The purpose of this research is to find out whether the use of Hangman Game as a teaching media is effective to use in teaching vocabulary or not. Research method: 1) the research design of this research was done by using Quasi-Experimental with quantitative approach; 2) the population of this research was all students in i-class of ATI English Course Tulungagung; 3) the samples were i-1that consisted of 25 students and i-2 which contains 25 students too; 4) the research instrument was a test that divided into three sections such as knowing, understanding, and application; 5) the data analysis was done by using Independent T-test. The finding of this research presented that the use of Hangman Game was effective in teaching vocabulary at ATI English Course Tulungagung. The effectiveness of Hangman game can be seen in detail as follow: 1) the mean score on the pretest of students who were taught by using Hangman Game was 63.20 and the mean of the posttest was 75.12. The gain of the mean score was 11.92; 2) the mean score on the pretest of students who were taught without using Hangman Game was 62.28 and the mean of the posttest was 62.16. The gained score between pretest and posttest was 0.12. Next, the result of the T-test at the significant level of 0.05 showed that the significant value (sig-2 tailed) was 0.00 which smaller than 0.05 (0.00 < 0.05). It means that there is a significantly different score in students’ vocabulary mastery for those who were taught by using Hangman Game and those who taught by using conventional teaching method.
