Advisor: Emmi Naja, M.Pd Keywords: Effectiveness, Summarization technique, Reading ability Many students’ have difficulties in learning English, especially in reading ability. As an English teacher, we have to be able to find an interesting technique to make the students will be enthusiastic and not fell bored with our teaching English. So, the writer is interested to find out the technique in reading ability. One of the techniques used in teaching narrative text toward students’ reading ability is using summarization technique for the second year students at SMPN 1 Sumbergempol Tulungagung in the academic 2015/2016. The formulations of the research problem were: 1). How is the students’ reading ability in learning narrative text before being taught by using summarization technique?, 2) How is the students’ reading ability in learning narrative text after being taught by using summarization technique?, 3) Is there any significant difference between students’ reading ability in learning narrative text before and after using summarization technique? The purposes of the study were to: 1) to know the students’ reading ability in learning narrative text before being taught by using summarization technique, 2) to know the students’ reading ability in learning narrative text after being taught by using summarization technique, 3) to know the difference between students’ reading ability in learning narrative text before and after using summarization technique. Research method: 1) the research design in this study was pre-experimental research with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this study was all students of the second year of SMPN 1 Sumbergempol Tulungagung in the academic year 2015/ 2016, 3) the sample was VIII C class which consists of 32 students, 4) the research instrument was test, 5) the data analysis used T-test. The result showed that students’ mean score before being taught using summarization technique is 72.12. While the students’ mean score of after being taught using summarization technique is 80.19. The result of computation, tcount was (-17.962) and ttable was (-2.040). By comparing the “t” was tcount >ttable known that (-17.962>-2.040). The significant value is 0.000 < 0.05, it means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) that state is significant difference of students’ reading ability by using summarization technique is accepted, while the null hypothesis (Ho) that states there is no significant difference of students’ reading ability by using summarization technique is rejected. Finally, summarization technique can be used as an alternative to teach reading comprehension to the students at Junior High School level.
