Abstract

Abidah, Lana Durrotul. Student Number 12510174024, 2020. “The Effectiveness of Using Jigsaw on Students 'Speaking Skills and Students' Motivation". Thesis. English Language and Teaching Program. School of Graduate Studies. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisors: Dr. sukarsono, M.Pd and Dr. Dwi Astuti Wahyu N, M.Pd. Keywords: Jigsaw Method, Speech Ability, and Student Motivation The researcher chooses Jigsaw technique as the topic of the study because Jigsaw technique is the interesting technique of English learning to activate the students in learning process. It can improve the students' responsibility in the teaching learning process. According to some results from some previous studies, the researcher conducted study about the effectiveness of Jigsaw toward speaking ability and the students motivation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the use of the jigsaw method for students' speaking abilities and student motivation towards Senior High School students in the 10th academic year 2018/2019 at a public school in Tulungagung. The sample of this study are two classes with balanced student abilities. The data of this study were collected by conducting tests to determine students' speaking abilities and questionnaires to determine student motivation for the use of the jigsaw method. The research data was collected from two groups of students, namely the experimental group and the control group. In the experimental group, students were given material using the jigsaw method, while in the control group, students were given material using the method commonly used by teachers (not the jigsaw method). Data were analyzed using the MANOVA statistical method. The significant value of the dependent variable speaking ability is 0.000. Because the significant value is lower than 0.05, it can be concluded that the application of the jigsaw method has an influence on student learning outcomes or Ho is rejected. While on the method line the significant value of the dependent variable is 0.071 motivation. Because the significant value is higher than 0.05, it can be concluded that the application of the jigsaw method does not affect student motivation or Hi is accepted. In the results of the study, it was found that the effective jigsaw method was used to improve students' speaking abilities and increase student motivation. Research conducted by researchers concludes that the jigsaw method can motivate students to act more actively. With the group learning model, students become more responsible for the group and have their respective roles in understanding each of their material. In addition, by conducting small discussions with each group and explaining their material to other groups, will make students' speaking abilities improve. Students in the experimental group become more active and can receive and provide different information and opinions. In addition, students can also give opinions verbally.
