Abstract

ABSTRACT Fauzi, Adin. Registered Number Student 3213113031. 2015. “The Effectiveness of Edmodo in Increasing Students’ Writing Skilll in Recount Text (An Experimental Study towards The First Graders of MAN Rejotangan in Academic Year 2014-2015).” Thesis. English Education Program. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Arina Shofiya, M.Pd Keywords: Edmodo, Social Network, ICT, Writing Skill, Recount Text. Writing is considered as the most difficult skill for language learners to master. Language learners need to pay attention to higher level skills of planning, and organizing as well as lower level skills of spelling, punctuation, word choice, and so on. Within the rapid changes in technology, the use of ICT has largely influenced the way learners write. The well-known ICT such social networks also have been widely used by learners across the globe to shape their writing. This study examines the use of one of social networks which is specifically designed for educational purpose, Edmodo, to increase the first graders’ skill in composing recount text at MAN Rejotangan. The formulation of research problem: Is Edmodo effective in increasing the first graders skill in writing recount text at MAN Rejotangan? Based on the formulation of research problem, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Edmodo in increasing the first graders’ skill in writing recount text. This study used quantitative approach with pre-experimental design. The participants of the study comprised 9 students from Excellent program. They were purposefully assigned as the sample of the study. Before starting the treatment, two similar tests were prepared as the pretest/posttest to find out students’ writing skill in recount text at the beginning and at the end of the study. After getting the data of students’ score either from pretest and posttest, IBM SPSS Statistics 20 was used to investigate whether Edmodo was effective in increasing students’ writing skill in recount text. The finding showed significant differences between the result of pretest and posttest. The mean of post-test scores (80.5) was larger than the mean of pre-test scores (71.3). From statistical calculation, it was confirmed that the value of t_(obtained ) (-3.538) was larger than t_(table ) (-2.306). Also, the way to test whether the null hypothesis could be rejected was by comparing p-value with the standard level of significance, 0.05. The convention to reject the null hypothesis is when the p-value of the obtained statistics is less than 0.05 (Balnaves & Calputi, 2001). The finding showed that p-value was less than 0.05 (0.006 < 0.05). Thus, there was enough evidence indicating that the null hypothesis could be rejected, and it could be concluded that using Edmodo was effective to increase students’ writing skill in recount text. This study had some implications as follows: (1) Since writing is a difficult skill, a teacher must equip himself/herself with up-to-date techniques, methods, and media to teach the students so that the result of this research can be valuable for language teachers at the level of senior high school. (2) This study introduced a new media to facilitate students in learning to write and also provide an opportunity for them to construct and share their knowledge. (3) Edmodo is very practical and useful either for teachers or students since it provides a room to learn virtually and keep in touch each other. (4) The findings of this study promoted the on-line learning and decreased the problem of the distance learning. (5) Edmodo is also applicable to teach reading, grammar, and vocabulary.
