Abstract

The Effectiveness of Using Song from JOOX Music Application on Students’ Vocabulary Mastery of the Twelfth Grade at SMKN 3 Boyolangu Tulungagung, Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Nany Soengkono Madayani, SS., M.Pd. Keywords: Song, JOOX Music Application, Vocabulary Mastery Vocabulary is components of the language that English learners must mastered. A person’s vocabulary is described as the set of all the phrases understood through others. A vocabulary is needed to know and master to make it easier to interact with others. Vocabulary is considered as an important part of language because it supports students’ abilities in developing their language skills. Nowadays, the use of gadget has become a habit for millennial Teacher in millennium generation should combine the materials with many circumstances. Based on what is the students’ need, the researcher used song from JOOX Music Application because it requires a relax and pleasant athmosphere to learning vocabulary. JOOX Music Application is a streaming music application. JOOX has many interesting features including: provides millions of songs that can be enjoyed for free with diverse music collection from local to international with various genres, users can access dozens of radios divided into several categories, recommendations JOOX playlist provides a selection of playlists based on music trends, the Top Chart feature is a feature that lists the most frequent song order played by active JOOX useres, and a paid feature for JOOX VIP users. This study was done to verify whether or not song from JOOX Music Application was effective used in teaching vocabulary mastery for the students. The statement of the research problem was “Do the students’ taught vocabulary mastery by using song from JOOX Music Application have significantly different scores from those taught by traditional method?” Research method: 1) this research used Quasi-Experimental with quantitative approach as the research design, 2) the population of this research was twelfth grade of SMKN 3 Boyolangu Tulungagung, 3) the samples were XII TEI 3 class consisted of 34 students (as experimental class) and XII TEI 2 class consisted of 34 students (as control class), 4) the research instrument was test, 5) the data analysis was used T-test. The finding of this research showed that song from JOOX Music Application was effective used in teaching vocabulary mastery at twelfth grade of SMKN 3 Boyolangu Tulungagung. the effectiveness of song from JOOX Music Application can be shown in the following points: 1) the mean score of students on pre-test taught by using song from JOOX Music Application was 55.59 and the mean score of post-test was 85.88. the gained of the mean score was 30.29. 2) the mean score of students on pre-test taught without using song from JOOX Music Application was 55.00 and the mean score of post-test was 66.18. the gained of the mean score was 11.18. 3) the result of t-test at significance level of 0.05 showed that the significant values (sig-2 tailed) was 0.00 smaller than 0.05 (0.00<0.05), it means that H₀ was rejected and Hα was accepted. The result means that there is significant different score in vocabulary of students taught by using song from JOOX Music Application and those taught by using conventional method. So, using songs from Joox Music Application is not only effective to taught vocabulary mastery for 8 grade students, but also effective to taught vocabulary mastery for twelfth grade at SMKN 3 Boyolangu Tulungagung.
