Abstract

ABSTRACT Anjarwati, Sri. Registered Number Student 12510184027. 2020. Developing English Materials for Islamic Junior High School. Thesis English Education Department. Magister Program. State Islamic Institude (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisors: Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S., M.Pd. and Dr. Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, M.Pd. Key words: textbook, material development, curriculum and islamic character. Textbook is an instructional material as a subject matter taught at schools and which is designed for specific groups of learners in a defined context, such as in a specified educational context. The purpose of this research was mainly intended to develop materials of English textbook “When English Rings the Bell” for seventh grade of Junior High School.The object of this research is English Textbook named “When English Rings the bell” written by The Ministry of Education and Culture in 2017. This research was conducted by following model of steps of Borg and Gall (1938:772). The material development includes some procedures of need analysis, material development and expert validation. Based on the results of questionares distributed to 20-first graders of SMPIQu Al Bahjah Tulungagung, the interviews done to the teacher and book analizing, this research revealed that most of the students and English teachers require English instructional materials embracing religious and general knowledge. After validated by experts this research finally produced English materials that were supplemented by a teacher’s guide and student’s worksheets. This research describes some cases which should be done by the teachers in developing the materials of English textbook. They are analyzing the book in order to decide the chapter will be developed, arranging the guidelines for the proposed supplementary material development and developing proposed supplementary material development. The findings show that the materials in the first two chapters have been developed by the researcers in five stages of scientific approuch. They are materials for observing, questioning, experimenting, associating and communicating activities. For each stage, the materials are developed through some steps, i.e deciding the skill to develop, arranging classroom activities, and also completing the classroom activities by giving the guidelines to be used in teaching learning process. With the existence of religion subject, the awareness and the understanding of learning in islamic become an advantage for the process of integrating islamic values and the implementation of learning. The final product of this research and development was an suplementary book for first semester of the sevent grades. In each unit the researcher also put some qur’an verses and pictures related to the topics to make this book interesting and easy to learn. After validated by the experts this research finally produced English materials that were supplemented book. This product could increasingly motivate the students to learn English. It is becouse the content of product involves religious aspects and the content of materials were consedered new for them.
