The Effectiveness of Using Gist Strategy on Students’ Reading Comprehension Achievement in Descriptive Text of Seventh Grader of MTs AswajaTunggangri Academic Year 2018/2019. Sarjana Thesis English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd. Keywords: Effectiveness, Gist Strategy, Reading Comprehension. Reading is one of language skills which is very important to be learnt by students. Through this activity, students can improve their own language and experience. Reading comprehension ability becomes very important, but in act many students are having difficulties in comprehending. This is a condition where the importance of reading strategies comes in so as to facilitate the reading process and give students a clear sense of what they are reading. Based on explanation about, the writer is interested to conduct the research, entitled The Effectiveness of Using Gist Strategy on Students’ Reading Comprehension Achievement in Descriptive Text of Seventh Grader of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri in Academic Year 2018/2019. Because from the previous study this strategy is effective to teaching reading. The formulation of the research problem in this study is: Is there any significant different score of the students reading comprehension achievement taught with and without using gist strategy at the seventh grade of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri. The objective of the research is: To find out whether there is any significant different score of the students reading comprehension achievement taught with and without using gist strategy at the seventh grader of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri. This research used Quasi-Experimental Research by using Nonrandomized Control Group, Pretest-Posttest design. The population was all students of seventh grader of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri. The sample of the study was two groups of 47 students of VII A as experimental group and VII B as control group that chosen by purpose sampling technique. The research instrument used is test. The researcher analyzed the data by using Independent Sample T-test with SPSS Statistic 16.0. The result of this study showed that there are any significant different score of the students reading comprehension achievement taught with and without using gist strategy. It can be seen from the mean of students’ gained score in experimental group was 13.4 while the mean of students’ gained score in control group was 6.14. The mean of posttest in experimental group was 76.60 and the mean of posttest in control group was 64.32. Then, the significant p-value is smaller than the significant level (0.000<0.05). In other words, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means that Gist Strategy was effective in reading comprehension achievement at the seventh grade of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri.
