The Contribution of Chatting WhatsApp on the Students Ability in Developing Englih Writing Fifth Semester of Engish Deparment at IAIN Tulungagung. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Arina Shofiya, M.Pd. Keyword: WhatsApp, Writing Learning, Students In teaching and learning process, teacher needs strategy or media to make the lesson easier. Learning strategies are necessary in supporting the realization of the whole competence. Technology has a positive effect on both of the teacher and the learner. The wireless portable devices such as WhatsApp and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) could provide opportunities to respond to the need of this generation. The use of ICT in education, including teaching writing and learning is a positive response to the development of the information and communication technology. The most recent popular social network is WhatsApp application. WhatsApp Messenger users can send each other images, video, and audio media messages WhatsApp, allows its users to use their Internet connection to send messages to each other. WhatsApp is like a chat program for mobile phones. Smart phones are becoming increasingly popular and WhatsApp is available for almost all Smartphone. The formulation of the research problem and development were (1) whether it is effective to use WhatsApp to student’s ability in writing learning at State Islamic Institute Tulungagung in fifth semester of English Department? (2) What the results students get after using the WhatsApp chat in writing skills at State Islamic Institute Tulungagung in fifth Semester of English Department? The objectives of this study was: (1) to identify effective or not using WhatsApp in writing learning (2) to identify the results obtained by students after using WhatsApp chat in writing learning The design of this study was descriptive qualitative research design. The subject was the students fifth semester of IAIN Tulungagung. Researcher was the key instrument of this study, to collect and analyze data. In the process of collecting data there were techniques used, observation, interview, and documentation. To improve the validity of data, the researcher used methods and triangulation data. The result of this study showed that using chat WhatsApp contribute on student’s ability in developing English writing are developing ideas in writing English through chat in WhatsApp, enrich the student vocabulary, besides increase knowledge also broaden insight and communication more useful. The commitment also be able to develop abilities to write English more fluently. Confident to used English in chat looked more open to the language used. Even though students sometimes still have shortcomings in writing English but withconfidence students also be able to learn to be even better. The frequently practice used chat in WhatsApp can also improve students' writing skills. Because more often students used chat in English, that mean students more fluent in English. The researcher suggests for students to able to utilize social media that are owned specifically WhatsApp to share learning information with positive goals so that learning activities can be carried out to the maximal. The second, for the lecturers can be develop expertise in the use of social media so that the features available in the WhatsApp application can be utilized to the maximum and the dissemination becomes or interesting. The last, for further researcher are expected to look for other factors that can influence the dissemination of learning information other than the use of WhatsApp social media for Junior High School and Senior High School. For the future researcher, they can use this research as a reference to the next research.
