Abstract

Oktafiani, Ayu. Students Register Number, 17203163152. 2020. The Effectiveness of “Roundtable Technique and Numbered Head Together” toward The Students’ Writing Ability in Hortatory Text of 11th Graders at MAN 3 Blitar. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Erna Iftanti, SS., M.Pd. Keywords: Effect, Roundtable Technique, Numbered Head Together (NHT), Writing Ability Writing is a complicated skill among the other skills in learning English. In writing, the students do not only think about the aspects in writing, but also construct their ideas before they write especially in hortatory text. In writing hortatory text, they have to have arguments that can persuade the readers to take action through their writing. So, the students should develop their ideas in order to strengthen their arguments. Those cases that make the students get difficulty in writing. Then, it can affect their writing ability. Therefore, the students need appropriate technique that can help them to improve their writing ability. The use of Roundtable Technique and Numbered Head Together can be alternative techniques to teach writing. Those techniques can create the teaching and learning process alive and the students’ writing ability can improve. By using those techniques, the students are invited to make a group in order to cooperate each other while learning writing. In the group, they also have responsibility to contribute in doing the task. The research questions in this study were: 1) How is the students’ writing ability in hortatory text taught by using Roundtable technique? 2) How is the students’ writing ability in hortatory text taught by using Numbered Head Together (NHT)? 3) Is there any significant different score of students’ writing ability in hortatory text that taught by using Roundtable Technique and those taught by using NHT? 4) Which one is more effective between Roundtable Technique and NHT to improve the students’ writing ability in hortatory text? The research design of this study was comparative study using Quasi-experimental design with quantitative approach. The population of this study was the students of 11th grade at MAN 3 Blitar in Academic Year 2019/2020. The samples were XI IIS 1 that consisted of 33 students as Roundtable group and XI MIA 1 with 36 students as NHT group. The research instrument was writing test about hortatory text. The data was analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 version. The result of this study showed that the mean value of students who were taught by using Roundtable Technique was 69.27 and the mean value of the students who were taught by using NHT was 76.78. Then, P-value (two-tailed) was 0.000 and it was divided 2 because the writer used one-tailed (0.000/2=0). Since 0 was lower than significance α (0<0.05), it meant that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. So, there was significant different score between the students who were taught by using Roundtable Technique and those taught by using Numbered Head Together (NHT). While, the mean value of NHT (76.78) was higher than the mean value of Roundtable Technique (69.27). It could be interpreted that NHT was the technique that more effective than Roundtable Technique to improve the students’ writing ability of hortatory text in 11th graders at MAN 3 Blitar. NHT can be used as the alternative technique, which creates the situation and learning process quite comfortable so that they could be easier in writing of hortatory text.
