Keywords: effectiveness, vocabulary self-collection strategy, vocabulary mastery Vocabulary is the main aspect of language. Vocabulary becomes the basic to build and improve the four basic skills of English like speaking, listening, reading, and writing. There are many strategies and techniques that can be applied for teaching vocabulary. One of them is Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy. Vocabulary Self collection Strategy helps teachers to increase student enthusiasm to learn new vocabulary, understand the new vocabulary by the context and remember them. The writer wanted to explore the effect of the use of Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy on students’ vocabulary in learning English especially in descriptive text. Based on description above, the formulations of the research problems are “Is there any effect of using vocabulary self-collection strategy with students’ vocabulary mastery in the first grade of MA MA’ARIF UDANAWU?”. The objectives are “To investigate the effect of using vocabulary self-collection strategy with students’ vocabulary mastery in first grade of MA MA’ARIF UDANAWU”. The writer used experimental design with quantitative approach. The writer conducted this study by using quasi experimental research. The population was all students of first grades of MA MA’ARIF Udanawu Blitar. The sample of the study was two groups of 78 students of X MIA 5 as control group and X MIA 6 as experiment group in the academic year of 2018/2019. The instruments used in this research were vocabulary test with multiple choices (pre-test and post-test). Both groups had to take a pre-test before the treatment was given. The experiment group received treatments by using Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy and the control group without using Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy. After getting the treatment, both groups had to do a post-test. In order to find out whether there was a significant difference in the students’ achievement between the experimental and the control groups, t-test statistical analysis was applied by using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS). The result showed that there was a significant difference in the students’ vocabulary achievement between the experimental and the control groups. The mean score of students’ on pre-test taught by Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy was 68.46 and the mean score of post-test was 73.72. The gain of the mean score was 5.26. The mean score of students’ on pre-test without taught by Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy was 72.18 and the mean score of post-test was 68.33.
