English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: spelling errors, writing recount text. Learning English is not only about how to communicate well, but someone who has good language skills can also deliver their opinions by writing. At the school, students who wants to express their opinion by writing must pay attention in aspects of writing. Not only about grammar, but other aspects like mechanic must also be considered. Moreover, one of the mechanic aspect that students are very often in making errors is spelling. Students who make errors in spelling when they write such kind of texts in English teaching learning process usually they do not aware or they really do not know how to write the true of word. So, in this case teacher must pay attention more about the students’ spelling in writing because when the students write wrong words, it will change the meaning of the words. The research questions of this study are : (1). What are the spelling errors appeared in students’ writing recount text ?, (2). What are the reasons of making spelling errors in students’ writing recount text ?, (3). What are the students and teachers effort to reduce students’ spelling errors in writing recount text ? Accordingly, the objectives of this study are: (1). To understand the spelling errors appeared in students’ writing recount text, (2). To understand the reasons of making spelling errors in students’ writing recount text, (3). To understand the students and teachers effort to reduce students’ spelling errors in writing recount text. This study used qualitative approach with descriptive design. The subject of this study was the tenth Social 4B class which consisted of 26 students. The research instruments are documentation of students’ writing recount text and interview of English teacher and the ten Social 4B students. In analyzing the data, the writer used data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result of this study shows that the spelling errors that students have been made are about omission of letter, addition of letter, single letter instead of double letter, substitution of letter, interchange two adjacent letter, involving an apostrophe, and word segmentation error. How ever the reasons why the students make spelling errors are based on intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Then, the efforts from the teacher are asked students to frequently open dictionary when attending English lessons, whether when writing or speaking.
