Abstract

The Correlation Between Students’ Habit in Listening to English Songs and Their Vocabulary Mastery of The Eighth Grade Students at MTs Darissulaimaniyyah Durenan Trenggalek. Thesis. English Education Program. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Nany Soengkono Madayani, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Habit in listening, English songs, Vocabulary. Listening takes the main role in language learning, before we start reading, writing and speaking. Then, listening activity needs integrating skill of language, such as pronunciation, vocabulary mastery, writing, speaking, and reading. Christine (2002: 1), listening takes up as much as 50% of our everyday communication time. It is the main channel of classroom instruction and the most used language skill at work and at home and paying attention and making an effort to process what you heard. In other words, listening skill allows you to understand what someone is talking about. The formulation of research problem was “Is there any correlation between students’ habit in listening to English songs and their vocabulary mastery of the eighth-grade students at MTs Darissulaimaniyyah Durenan Trenggalek”. The purpose of this research was to know the correlation between two variables; Students habit in listening to English songs (X), and their vocabulary mastery (Y). It carried out of the eighth-grade students at MTs Darissulaimaniyah Durenan Trenggalek in academic year 2019/2020. There were 25 students took as the sample of this study who was determined by using analysis prerequirement test consisted of normality test and linearity test through a quantitative approach. So, the research instruments were using questionnare and test; while the data analysis using the T-test. The data analysis showed that the correlation coefficient was 0.578. At the level of significant α = 0.05 and the number of respondents was 25, the sig. (2-tailed) is 0.00. It is smaller than 0.05. Based on the fact, the researcher concludes that there is significant correlation coefficient between the students’ habit in listening to English songs and their vocabulary mastery.
