Abstract

ABSTRACT The work entitled "Difficulties Solving the Pythagorean Theorem Problem Regarding Motivation of Class VIII-D Students at SMPN 2 Sumbergempol Tulungagung Academic Year 2019/2020" was written by Fenny Nur Hidayah, NIM. 17204163120, led by Samsul Bakri, S.Pd.I, M.Pd. Keywords: difficulties, Pythagorean theorem, motivation. The background to this research lies in math learning activities where students have learning diffculties. These diffculties can be seen in the mistakes that students have made in solving questions, both in practice and in daily problems. One of the internal factors that cause diffculties is motivation, since motivation to learn plays an important role in the learning process. This study aims to describe: (1) the difficulty of class VIII-D students in the SMPN 2 Sumbergempol class with high motivation to solve Pythagorean theorem questions (2) the difficulty of class VIII-D students in SMPN 2 Sumbergempol with moderate motivation to solve questions about the Pythagorean theorem (3) Difficulties of students in class VIII-D with SMPN 2 Sumbergempol with little motivation to solve questions about the Pythagorean theorem. This study uses a qualitative approach to the type of case study conducted at SMPN 2 Sumbergempol Tulungagung. The research topics consisted of 3 students who represented each category with high, medium and low motivation. The research tool consisted of a questionnaire on motivation to learn and test questions on learning difficulties. Data acquisition techniques through observation, questionnaires, tests for learning difficulties, interviews and documentation. The data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. Check the validity of the data by means of extended observations, persistence or constancy of observations and triangulation. The results showed the following: (1) Highly motivated students had no difficulty solving the Pythagorean theorem. In this category, students have no conceptual difficulties, in principle, and no difficulty solving verbal problems. (2) Pupils with motivation have a little difficulty in solving the Pythagorean theorem problems. In this category students have difficulty solving verbal problems. (3) Pupils with little motivation have difficulty solving questions about the Pythagorean theorem. In this category, students have difficulty with the concept, principle, and solving verbal problems.
