Abstract

Keywords: Effectiveness, Herringbone Technique, Reading Comprehension. Reading is a process in getting information. Reading involves in the interaction between the reader and the writer. The reading skill can be improved by applying appropriate technique in teaching reading. It is hypothesized that herringbone technique can facilitate students to get important information in a text that can help student improving their reading comprehension. Research problems in this research are: 1) How is the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text before being taught using herringbone technique?, 2) How is the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text after being taught using herringbone technique?, 3) Is there any significant different before and after being taught using herringbone technique toward students’ reading comprehension of narrative text? The objectives of this research are: 1) To know the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text before being taught using herringbone technique. 2) To know the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text after being taught using herringbone technique 3) To know the significant different before and after being taught using herringbone technique toward student’s reading comprehension of narrative text. The design of the research is Experimental research. The study was conducted at VIII B of MTs Al Huda Kedungwaru Tulungagung. There were 25 students as the sample of study. The instrument of this study was test. Data analysis used was applied bivariate correlation analysis by using Pearson Product Moment in SPSS 20.0. The result of this study shows that based on statistical calculation using SPSS 20.0, it was found that the statistical test by using t-test shows that t-test empiric value (tcount) is (9.867) and then t-critic value (ttable) at 0.05 % level significance is (1.711). It means that t-empiric value (tcount) was bigger than t-critic value (ttable) with degree of freedom (df) 24 and the level of significance 5%. Finally, based on the explanation above, it can be seen that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. Thus, it can conclude that herringbone technique is effective to improve students’ reading comprehension especially in reading narrative text.
