Abstract

Keywords: Correlation, Habit in English, Reading Comprehension. English is one of the important languages to learn in school. There are four skills that should be mastered by learners. One of them is reading. Because of the students have lower skills in inferential reading comprehension. So reading habit in English can support the students to be able to comprehend the text. In this case, reading habit is very important to support inferential readings comprehend. The problem of this, the writer interest to doing research. The research problems in this thesis are: 1) How is the students’ reading habit in English? 2)How is the students’ reading comprehension? ,3) Is there any correlation between reading habit in English and reading comprehension? The purpose of this research are : 1) To know the student’s reading habit in English. 2) To know the students reading comprehension. 3) To know wheter there is any positive correlation between reading habit in English and reading comprehension. The research design was correlational study, in which there two independent variable – “students reading habit in English” and “reading co,prehension”. All of second semester of students English education program at IAIN Tulungagung, academic year 2013/2014 were the population is 120 students from four class diveded into A, B, C, and D. Here the sample was B class that consisted of 30 students. They are chosen by using purposive sample. The data were gained by administering questionnaire about student reading habit in English and documenting of reading score as the students reading comprehension. Then, the data were analyzed by using Product Moment Formula. The hypothesis was tested by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The findings of the study showed that the good reading habit in English was 84 and the lowest was 54 and mean score was 64.9. Meanwhile, the good score of reading comprehension was 95 and the lowest was 45, and the mean score was 74.2. Then, the result showed that the coefficient correlation was 0.642. it mean that those variables positively correlation. This result (rvalue) was good that the “r value” (0.642>0.342 in significant level 5% and >0.499 in significant level 1%). It showed that the Ho was rejected and Hi was accepted. It meant that there was a significant correlation between students reading habit in English and reading comprehension. .
