Abstract

Keywords: effectiveness, hot potatoes quiz, grammar achievement, simple present tense Grammar is a foundation component needed to master the four skills of English. One way to teach grammar for students in meaningful ways is by using hot potatoes quiz. Hot potatoes quiz is an application gotten from installing the program and can be used to create any types of quizzes in web pages form. In hot potatoes quiz, the students can do exercises by using computer and learn their mistakes themselves by looking at feedbacks for both correct and incorrect answers given by the teacher. This research focuses on: 1) How is the students’ grammar achievement in simple present tense before being taught by using hot potatoes quiz at the seventh grade of MTs Al-Huda Bandung Tulungagung?, 2) How is the students’ grammar achievement in simple present tense after being taught by using hot potatoes quiz at the seventh grade of MTs Al-Huda Bandung Tulungagung?, and 3) Is there any significant difference on the students’ grammar achievement in simple present tense before and after being taught by using hot potatoes quiz at the seventh grade of MTs Al-Huda Bandung Tulungagung? This research purposes to: 1) find out the students’ grammar achievement in simple present tense before being taught by using hot potatoes quiz at the seventh grade of MTs Al-Huda Bandung Tulungagung, 2) find out the students’ grammar achievement in simple present tense after being taught by using hot potatoes quiz at the seventh grade of MTs Al-Huda Bandung Tulungagung, and 3) find out whether there is any significant difference on the students’ grammar achievement in simple present tense before and after being taught by using hot potatoes quiz at the seventh grade of MTs Al-Huda Bandung Tulungagung. The research design in this study was pre-experimental research design that was classified into one group pretest and posttest design with quantitative approach. The population of this study was all of the seventh grade students of MTs Al-Huda Bandung Tulungagung at the second semester of academic year 2013/ 2014 consisted of 218 students. The sample was VII C class consisting of 33 students. It was taken by using purposive sampling. The research instrument was tests, in the form of pretest and posttest. The data got from administering the tests was analyzed by using paired sample t-test through SPSS 16.0. The statistical analysis used paired sample t-test through SPSS 16.0 showed that the mean of posttest was higher than the mean of pretest (75.5455 > 65.9091). In addition, it showed that in significant level (α) 5%, the value of tcount was higher than t-table (6.582 > 2.037) and the significance value was lower than the significant level (0.000 < 0.05). It can be said that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means that there is any significant difference on the students’ grammar achievement in simple present tense before and after being taught by using hot potatoes quiz. Therefore, hot potatoes quiz is effective towards grammar achievement and it is suggested to be used in teaching grammar, especially at the seventh grade students of MTs Al-Huda Bandung Tulungagung.
