Abstract

Key word: Teaching vocabulary by using games In teaching learning activities, the teachers have a big role and influence for their students especially for young learners. Vocabulary is strongly needed to build sentence to make a communication. Without vocabulary mastery the students will find difficulties to communication. In teaching vocabulary at the third year’s student as young learners, the teacher should have various ways so the students won’t feel bored. And games can make the students learn vocabulary interesting without getting a pressure which influence their mood. Then, it is better for a teacher to use language games as a media for vocabulary learning. The formulations of the study are: (1) How does the teacher teach vocabulary using games? (2) What kinds of games are used in teaching vocabulary? (3) How do the games help students to enrich vocabulary? The objectives of the research are: (1) To know how the teachers teach vocabulary using games (2) To identify the kind of games are used in teaching vocabulary. (3) To know the how the games do help students to enrich vocabulary. The significance of the research is: For the teacher is to: (1) gives contribution, add method or technique in teaching vocabulary by using games. (2) To provide additional information to improve the quality of teaching to reach the goal. (3) To increase the better techniques in teaching English at elementary school. For the students is to increase the student’s interest in learning English. For the headmaster is expected to facilitate the English teacher in conducting her or his teaching. For the writer is to get useful experiences in teaching English using games method. Research methodology was used in this research is descriptive with qualitative approach. The technique used to collect the data was observation, interview and documentation. Data analyzing it can be concluded: (1) In teaching vocabulary to the third grade students using games, the teacher used some types of activities; they are having a techniques in teaching materials. There is presentation, practice and product in teach vocabulary using games. (2) The teacher used some of games and chooses suitable game in teaching vocabulary. The games likes of whispering games, crossword games, puzzle, matching word with picture and so on. It can be known from the researcher’s observation, information from the teacher and the student’s statements that they felt fun, enjoy, interested and they could understand the lesson easily when they are taught using games method. (3) The teacher chooses games as the simple illustrated media to facilitate students in method of learning. While playing games they understand the lesson easily and enrich vocabulary students. Based on the conclusions the writer suggests that the teachers should be able to choose games which are suitable for the students, in order to the students won’t felt bored and the students must be active during the teaching learning process. At last, it is hoped that the result of this study can be used to improve the students’ ability in mastering English skill or as least it can be used as input for English teacher to improve her knowledge in teaching English vocabulary.
