Abstract

Keywords: speaking, instructional media, puppet One of the instructional media can be used to teach speaking is puppet. Puppet (is an inanimate figure or well known as doll) has characteristics funny and interesting. It can stimulate the young learners to express their feelings or opinions and they will become active in a speaking class. Activities can be promoted by using puppet likes storytelling and dialogues. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) How is the students’ achievement at MI Ummul Akhyar in speaking before they are taught by using puppet as a media? 2) How is the students’ achievement at MI Ummul Akhyar in speaking after they are taught by using puppet as a media? 3) Is there any significant different scores of the students’ achievement in speaking before they are taught by using puppet as a media and after they are taught by using puppet as a media? The purpose of this research were to: 1) find out the students’ score in speaking before they are taught using puppet as a media, 2) find out the students’ score in speaking after they are taught using puppet as a media, 3) find out if there is significant effect of using puppet as a media on the students’ achievement in speaking. Research Method: 1) the research design in this study was experimental one-group pre-test and post-test design, 2) subject of this research was all students of fourth grade at MI Ummul Akhyar, consisting of 24 students, 3) the research instrument was test, 4) the data analysis was using T test. t : Md/√((∑x^2 d)/(N(N-1))) The result showed that the students’ score in speaking before they are taught using puppet as a media was 17,542. While the students’ score after they are taught using puppet as a media was 21,542. The Tcount was 8,811, whereas Ttable with significant level 5% was 2,07. So, Tcount was greater than Ttable. This means that Ha which states that there is significant effect in using puppet as a media to teach speaking to the IV grades at MI Ummul Akhyar is accepted. Whereas, Ho which states that there is no significant effect of using puppet as a media to teach speaking to IV graders at MI Ummul Akhyarl is rejected. In other words, puppet media can be used as an alternative to teach speaking to the students at MI level.
