Abstract

English Language and Teaching Pogram School of Graduate Studies State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung.Supervisors: Dr.Arina Shofiya,M.Pd and Hj. Umy Zahroh,Ph.D KeyWords: Cultural, English Books, Senior High School Culture is something that important to present the identity of the notion. It shared,learned, and accepts in society through ideas, beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and habits. Culture also cannot be separated with language because culture in language shows the identity. That is reason why a government put culture material through language in English teaching learning as Permendiknas state in No.2 2008 Chapter 5. the relation between culture and language indirectly gives impact to language teaching . Therefore, this study is going to discover how the english books for senior high school represent the culture. This study is a qualitative content analysis as research design. In this study, the data were taken from the English course books for Senior High School. To select the English books, this study employed purposive sampling. Two series of English course books were selected, specifically one English books entitled Bahasa Inggris for grade X published by Balitbang, Minister of Culture and Education and another course books entitled Pathway to English published by Erlangga. To select the unit analysis, twelve chapter were selected from Bahasa Inggris and Pathway to English for grade X by employing systematic random sampling. The Result showed that Bahasa Inggris and Pathway to English represent the culture in the form of source culture, target culture, and internatioanl culture. From the data provided, the researcher found out 156 occurances for social culture, 29 occurances for target culture, and 36 occurances for international culture meanwile pathway to English represent 86 occurances for source culture, 102 occurances for target culture and 23 occurances for Internatioanl culture. In other words, culture in Bahasa Inggris dominates by students culture than Pathway to English. But target culture are highly presented by Pathway to English. It doesnt mean that Bahasa Inggris better than Pathway to English. But, they have special character that in Bahasa Inggris, the book want to show Indonesian culture highly than other. In Pathway to English, the author want to show highly about target culture since English laguage is language from target culture. Both of them provide the opportunities to students to promote cultural awareness. Based on the result, the researcher suggests several things. For the students and teachers, English books can build the cultural’ identity and lead to achieve intercultural competence and cultural awareness . Last, for future researchers, it can be a reference for future research to inerview the author or explore more topics related the cultural representation focus on cultural awareness or intercultural competence.
