Abstract

Keywords: Speech act, Illocutionary act, Politeness maxims, Film. Language is the main key of human being to communicate with others. Human is socially creative that has the need to communicate with others. Human can communicate and share everything use language. In social life, people can perform language as communicative functions such as apologizing, requesting, promising, expressing surprise, embarrassing and many more. According to Austin, all expression of language must be viewed as acts. . The problems of this study are: (1) what kind of illocutionary act found in film ‘Alice in Wonderland’? (2) What are politeness maxims observed in film ‘Alice in Wonderland’? the purpose of this study are: (1) To describe the illocutionary act in film ‘Alice in Wonderland’, (2) To describe politeness maxims observed in film ‘Alice in Wonderland’. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative based on its purpose. The data collecting method used is documentation. She used it to collect data of the conversational fragments used by the characters in ‘Alice in Wonderland’. She used the Searle’s theory to analyze the illocutionary act and Leech’s theory to analyze the politeness maxims. The research findings show that the conversation between the characters in ‘Alice in Wonderland’ contains the illocutionary acts and observe the politeness maxims. Based on the problem of study, there are two result of the study.(1) The first result contains the types of illocutionary acts; Assertive act that is speech act that enables the speaker to express feelings, beliefs, and the like, Directive act is speech act that enables the speaker to compose some action of the hearer, Commisive act is speech act that comit the speaker to some future action, Expressive act is speech act whose function to express the psychological state of the speaker, and Declarative act is speech act whose effect immediate changes in the institutional state of affairs.(2) The second result contains politeness principle that is divided into some maxims, they are: Tact maxim is the maxim which the principles are minimizes cost to other and minimizes benefit to self, Generosity maxim is the maxim which the principles are maximizes benefit to other and maximizes cost to self, Modesty maxim is the maxim which the principles are minimizes praise of self and maximizes dispraise of self, Agreement maxim is the maxim which principles are minimizes disagreement between self and other and maximizes agreement between self and other, Approbation maxim is the maxim which principle are minimizes criticism to other and maximizes praise to other.
