Abstract

Key Words: Effectiveness, Contextual Teaching and Learning, Grammar Ability Together with development period, either technology or education needs some innovations. This matter is very important to improve the quality of education. It can be begun by many factor related with education, such as method, technique and media. Teaching method becomes one of the important points in teaching and learning activities. Teaching method is related to the technique being used by teacher during the process of teaching and learning activities, such as contextual teaching and learning method that help students discover meaningful relation between abstract ideas and practical application in the real world. The problems of this study are: (1)How is the students’ achievement in grammar before they were taught by using CTL method? (2)How is the students’ achievement in grammar after they were taught using CTL method? (3)Is there any effect of using CTL method toward the students’ grammar achievement? The purpose of this study is intended to find out: (1)To know the students’ achievement in grammar before they were taught by using CTL method. (2)To know the students’ achievement in grammar after they were taught using CTL method. (3) To know whether CTL gives any effect toward the students’ achievement in grammar or not. This research is experimental study, and it is intended to describe “The Effectiveness of Using Contextual Teaching and Learning in Improving Students’ Grammar Ability of Seventh Grade Students of UPTD SMPN 2 Rejotangan Academic Year 2009/2010”. Here the researcher take two classes (C and D class) become sample. The C class becomes an experimental group and D class become control group. The method of collecting data that used is test. The analysis technique of quantitative data used is T-test formula. Research findings: (1)The result of computation using T-test formula shown that tcount is 1,530. (2)The value of distribution with degree of freedom (N-2) 57-2=55 and in the level of significance 0, 05(5%) ttable is 1, 684. (3)The explanation from the result of tcount and ttable said that tcount < ttable (1, 530<1,684). So, the Ho is accepted, there is no significant effect of using CTL method in the grammar ability of seventh grade students. It can be concluded that teaching grammar using CTL method does not give significance effect to the students’ grammar ability.
