Abstract

Austin (1962) believes that when someone is producing an utterance, that person is not only uttering something but also doing an act, which called speech act. Speech act can be performed in class by a teacher to students. As teachers, they only produce utterance and students will do the action based on his or her utterance because the authority they have over the students. Mrs. Johnson as the main character of Dangerous Minds movie gives an example of a good way in motivating and teaching her students which not only focuses on academic side only through her utterances. Thus, analysing what kinds of speech act the main character use to teach her students becomes interesting topics to be analysed.
