Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, S.S.,M.Pd. Keyword: Translation Strategy, Translating Narrative Text. Translation is one of the tools for students in learning a foreign language. Therefore, translation is translating a text from source language to the target language. Translation is easier to do if the students translate by using translation strategies. Translating is one of the students’ academical activities and gives many benefits for the students. Practically, translation can improve the students’ knowledge. The students are successful in learning the language are those who are able to translate the foreign language into their own language (Larsen & Freeman, 2000). Hence, the students will be said to be successful in learning a foreign language if they understand the meaning. The formulation of the research problems of this study are: (1) what are the types of students’ strategies in translating the narrative text? (2) what is the most dominant of the students’ strategies in translating the narrative text? (3) how do the students’ use the strategies of translating in narrative text?. The aims of this study are: (1) to find the types of students’ strategies in translating the narrative text, (2) to know the most dominant of the students’ strategies in translating the narrative text and (3) to find out the students’ use of strategies for translating in narrative text. This study is conducted by using descriptive research with qualitative approach. The techniques of data collection are distributing a questionnaires and doing interview. The questionnaires is used to find the students’ strategies in translating the narrative text. Then, the interview is used to find information from the students’ strategies used. The findings of this study show: (1) there are six strategies that be found in the students’ result in translating narrative text: Borrowing, Calque, Literal Translation, Transposition, Modulation, and Adaptation. (2) The most dominant strategies of the students are Modulation. (3) The students’ use the translation in translating narrative text is depending on seeing at the context of the text, translating using a dictionary, and translating with their abilities.
