Abstract

ABSTRACT Ningrum, Yohana. Students Registered Number. 17203153098. 2019. The Effectiveness of Using Indirect Feedback On Students’ Ability in Writing Recount Text of The Tenth Grade at SMA Negeri 1 Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung.Advisor: Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S., M.Pd. Key Words: indirect feedback, recount text, writing Writing is simply regarded as the most complex language skill to study. This stands to reason for it has crucial elements covering content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. Therefore, students often make errors in learning writing. One of the problems is because the teacher teaches the students without using a good technique, especially in correcting students’ work. There is one of techniques that can be used to correct students’ work. Indirect feedback is believed to contribute in improving students’ writing ability. The research problems of this research are: (1) How is the students’ ability in writing recount text before being taught by using indirect feedback? (2) How is the students’ ability in writing recount text after being taught by using indirect feedback? (3) Is there any significant difference on the students’ ability in writing recount text before and after taught by using indirect feedback?. The objectives of this research: (1) To know the students’ ability in writing recount text before being taught by using indirect feedback. (2) To know the students’ ability in writing recount text after being taught by using indirect feedback. (3) To know the significant difference on the students’ ability in writing recount text before and after taught by using indirect feedback. The research method of this study is pre experimental with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample of this research was X MIPA 4 class which consisted of 36 students. The results of this research indicate that there is significant difference in students’ scores of students' abilities in writing recount text before and after using indirect feedback. The average value of students before using indirect feedback is 64.44. While the average value of students after using indirect feedback is 68.44. P-value (two-tailed) is 0,000 and divided to 2 because the researcher used one tailed test 0,000 / 2 = 0,000, the significance level is 0.05. Because 0,000 is smaller than the significance level (α) of 5%. The null hypothesis is rejected. It means that alternative hypotheses is accepted which say that the average value of students after using indirect feedback is higher than the average value of student before using indirect feedback. So the conclusion is indirect feedback is effective to teach writing recount text.
