Keyword: Effectiveness, speaking, Point-counterpoint strategy In learning English there are four skills that must be mastered by students, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Of all these skills, speaking is a skill that must be possessed by every student because speaking will connect someone to others in spoken communication. However many students still have problems in speaking, such us: limited vocabulary, lack pronounciation, and difficulty to understand grammatical to speak. For this reason, in learning, there should be an interesting strategy for students. Attractive strategies and not monotonous will provide positive input to learning. Furthermore the strategy used will build communication between teachers and students as well as communication between students and students. One of the right strategies in teaching is Point-Counterpoint.The formulation of the research problem is: “Is there any significant difference toward students’ speaking achievement before and after being taught by using Point-Counterpoint strategy to eleven grade students at MA Terpadu Al Anwar?”. The purpose of this study was to find out whether the use of Point-Counterpoint strategy was effectively used or ineffective in teaching in speaking to eleventh grade students. This research used pre-experimental design with quantitative approach. The population of this research was eleven grade students at MA Terpadu Al Anwar on academic year 2018/2019. The sample of this research was eleven social class which consisted of 36 students chosen by purposive sampling technique. To collect the data, the researcher used research instrument in form of test. To analyze the collected data, the researcher used SPSS 16.0 version software. The finding of this research showed that there is a significant difference between the result of pre-test and post-test. The mean of post-test was 75.00 and it was higher than the mean of pre-test (69.31), the different mean is 5.69. It means that there was increasing score on the students’ achievement. From statistical calculation showed that the significant value is 0.000 which was smaller than the significant level (0.050). It means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In addition, the use of Point-Counterpoint in speaking has a significant influence on the development of speak in students. So it can be concluded that this strategy can be used in teaching and learning especially speaking.
