Abstract

ABSTRACT Muzahaddah, Suci. 2019. Interlingual Subtitling Strategies from Indonesian to English In Short Animation Movies Translated By 6th Semester of English Department Students at IAIN Tulungagung in The Academic Year of 2017/2018. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Muh. Basuni, M.Pd. Key words: Interlingual, Subtitling Strategy, Translation, Accuracy, Short Movie. Translation is very important in order to help viewers from different countries to understand what they are watching. Those translations in movies or videos are called subtitle where the original dialogues from the source language (SL) are transferred into the target language (TL) which usually appears at the bottom of the screen where the actions and the dialogues are synchronized. The transfer from SL to TL is called interlingual subtitles. In this era, many foreign movies or English-based movies especially from Hollywood have dominated the movies industry around the world including Indonesia and many people from different range of age enjoy watching foreign movies. Even so, there are also Indonesian movies that have international audiences and viewers too and English subtitles are needed in those movies. In that case, the subtitle translation needed to be accurately translated so the audiences and viewers of the movie can understand and can get the messages from the movie. Therefore, research on subtitling strategies and translation accuracy in this study was conducted to know the most used subtitling strategy and the translation accuracy in the short movies analysed. The formulation of research problems were “What are the students’ most used subtitling strategies that applied in the characters’ religious terms of Indonesian-based short animation movies” and “How is the translation accuracy from Indonesian into English of the short animation movies”. Research method: 1) the research used descriptive qualitative method, 2) the object of this study was short animation movies that have been translated by 6th semester students of English department students at IAIN Tulungagung in the academic year of 2017/2018, 3) the data analysed were the dialogue of all the short animation movies, 4) the technique of data collection was observation, 5) the data analysis was using table sheets. The finding of the first research question showed that seven of ten Gottlieb’s subtitling strategies were used. Among all, the most used strategy was imitation with 207 (49.76%) data because the students who translated the short animation movies did not translated most of the third language, Arabic, and just imitate and took it as it was into the target language. And then, from the second research question, the research finding showed that most of the translations of all twelve short animation movies were accurately translated and the messages were delivered correctly into the target language.
